Stuart Friedman is a recognized leader in Michigan criminal appellate practice with more than three decades of litigation experience. A trusted advisor to criminal defense attorneys throughout the state, he has extensive expertise in post-conviction remedies, appellate procedure, sentencing issues, and the intersection of criminal and immigration law. He is the author of the criminal law chapter of the Institute for Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) Michigan Appeals Manual, the leading reference guide for Michigan appellate practitioners, and has lectured extensively on criminal appellate topics for organizations and institutions including the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM), the Michigan Appellate Bench-Bar Conference, Wayne State University Law School, and the University of Michigan Law School Prison Law Clinic. Stuart has served as Chair of the CDAM Amici Committee for the past 15 years, coordinating amicus briefs on significant appellate issues, and is a 17-year member of the CDAM Board of Directors, a former Council Member of the Appellate Practice Section of the State Bar of Michigan, and a founding member of the Michigan Appellate Bench-Bar Conference. His practice also encompasses crimmigration matters, international prisoner transfers, parole and probation law, and cross-border extradition issues. In addition to his Michigan practice, Stuart is licensed as a Barrister & Solicitor by the Law Society of Ontario and maintains an active Canadian practice in immigration and criminal law. Recognized by his peers as a Super Lawyer since 2013 and ranked among the top appellate lawyers on LinkedIn, Stuart combines rigorous legal scholarship, strategic appellate advocacy, and practical litigation experience to advance his clients’ interests at every stage of the criminal justice process.
